ARE WE ABOUT?
PAFT( Parents As First Teachers) is a service and programme to assist parents in their child’s development, general well-being.The focus of PAFT is the well being of the young child (0 –3 years) settling into the family and parent takes a dynamic and active role as an educator in the child’s developmental stages. It is also an early intervention service, targeting families whose social and family circumstances put their health, education and welfare at risk.
The PAFT co-coordinator together with the parent educators provides effective parent education programmes for Pacific parents with newborn babies and upwards.
PIECCA delivers PAFT services to many families in the South Auckland and Central Auckland areas. The PAFT team delivers a home-based parent education and support programme. Field Officers purchase, develop and use appropriate and safe learning resources for use in Pacific homes, however, funding for resources is insufficient.
The staff provides culturally appropriate handouts to parents in accordance with the ‘Born to learn’ curriculum. Resources identified in the community are also available for supporting and enriching families. Parent educators continue to have a holistic approach that involves health, education, culture and spiritual well-being and links the families with the relevant service providers.
